Springtime Gardening

Ready for gardening? It’s nearly time to get knee-deep in vegetables. You may have already gotten off to a good start by starting some plants indoors. But when and what should go in the dirt in May? (OR, stay in your greenhouse? – remember this is frost dependent!)

Here’s a quick rundown:

At the beginning of May (preferably the first week) plan on transplanting or starting all Parsley, Broccoli, Cabbage, and Cauliflower. In the last week of May, plan to start your Tomatoes, Bail, Marigolds, Pumpkins, and Winter Squash.

Now, the question is, how do you keep it all growing healthy? Take another sip of coffee…and save your coffee grounds!

• Add coffee grounds to your composting bin

• Spread coffee grounds around your plants to protect from snails and slugs—and cats!

• 2 cups of coffee grounds and 5 gallons of water makes a great homemade fertilizer. Steep used coffee grounds in the water overnight for best results.

• Add coffee grounds to your mulch to control weeds

• Coffee grounds also draw earthworms to your garden, which help turn the soil.
