Storing Your Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP)

One of the new trends sweeping the nation (Montana too!) is Stand-Up Paddleboarding, or SUP.

Windmill Storage is a favorite spot to store recreational toys: ATV’s, fishing gear, bicycles, and now SUP’s.

Stand-Up Paddleboards can cost upwards of $1000 a piece, so making sure you take care of the purchase is paramount. You don’t simply throw one of these boards in the corner! Plus, SUPs are easily 8 feet long and longer, so you need quite a bit of space.

At home, a Wall Rack or Ceiling Rack might be the answer. But, in a storage facility like Windmill, the best solution is a Free-Standing Rack system. These can cost between $300-500, but they can hold multiple boards and your paddles, too.

Here are some things to think about when shopping for your mobile rack:

1. What is the max weight it can hold? Considering the weight of all of your boards is essential.

2. Is the rack adjustable? Many SUPs are of different widths and thicknesses.

3. Does it come with bungee straps to hold the boards?

4. Does the rack come with a place to put your paddles? If not, you’ll have to find a place to keep those, too.

5. Some racks come with cable locks to lock down the boards in case of little kids or vehicles knocking into the mobile unit.

6. Pressure points. Some storage racks promise a zero pressure-point system.

7. Self-leveling feet.

Looks like this sport is here to stay!
